What does it take to become a Circut Overseer?
by frankiespeakin inwhat does it take to become a circuit overseer?.
the watchtower bible track society relies very heavily upon these men to make sure that they have a tight grip on each congregation.. the structure for control that the wt.
has in place needs it's eyes and ears to find out whether or not a congregation is following all the rules that the wt has laid out for it.

Scientific effect of shunning same as physical pain
by Phantom Stranger inwashington (ap) -- to a part of the brain that registers pain, the distressful reaction from social rejection is just as great as from a poke in the eye, according to researchers who measured the neural reactions of people who thought they had become outcasts in a game.
in an experiment at ucla, researchers monitored the blood flow in the brains of people who had been led to believe that other players in a computer ball game were intentionally excluding them and refusing to let them play with the group.
the shock and distress of this rejection registered in the same part of the brain, called the anterior cingulate cortex, that also responds to physical pain, said naomi i. eisenberger, a ucla researcher and first author of the study appearing this week in the journal science.

Shunning is barbaric. Thank you for the article.

OK, since I'm not JW, what exactly is a circuit overseer? How much power would he have? How big of an area would he supervise? Would he have assistants? Does he go to all the Halls and congregations and check them out? What would be the next step up from this if someone wanted to move up in the organization?
I get very confused about the layers of officialdom.

What JW belief/idea do you disagree with the most ???
by run dont walk inis there a particular belief/doctrine that really burns you up and makes you wonder how people could believe this, and did you as a loyal jw at one time believe in it (your most hated belief), what made you change your mind ???.
for me, i always enjoy reading the history of the watchtower (1879-1974), and how things constantly change from year to year.
the sodom and gomorrah question is hilarious .

I feel much like Poztate, that the shunning is the whip that enforces the other offensive doctrines. But taking it back a step, it is the belief that the Governing Body is always right and must not be questioned, and MUST be obeyed that goes hand in hand with the shunning.
As a "normal" person (thank you, Minimus), it is the mind control, or the decision to obey based on threats or the reward of paradise, however you choose it, that horrifies me most. I constantly have to remind myself that some very nice JWs would do barbaric things because the Watchtower tells them to.
Welcome to the board, Poztate. Always nice to see another Canadian around.

Wedding Present: The Family Happiness book
by Nosferatu inmy mother told me that after i get married, she's going to give me the "family happiness" book.
i've never read the thing, but i know it's a wts publication that often gets given or mailed out to newlyweds who aren't in the troof.
what's your opinion of this "fine christian publication"?

I'm a never been JW. I read this book. Every non JW should read it because it sure vaccinates you against you ever becoming a JW. Lots of emphasis on headship, wifely subjugation, letting the elders/Watchtower tell you what to do.
It is a "must read" for any woman involved with a JW guy. Is this the life she wants?

"Besides, We Give Gifts Throughout the Year!"
by Swan inthe jws always give a lengthly explanation as to why they don't celebrate christmas or birthdays, and then always add the final statement "besides, we give gifts throughout the year!".
yeah, right!
okay, lets get an unofficial count of all the people who actually did get gifts on other days of the year.

My daughter's ex boyfriend told me that same line about giving gift throughout the year. His parents gave him clothes for school and new sports equipment when he needed it, or a bonus to go with the really great report card. I am a "normal" (thank you, Minimus) person and I give things like that to my kids, too. They get special extra things on their birthdays or Christmas, and having to wait for them makes these gifts even more special. Anticipation is part of the fun. My kids give me and their Dad, and each other gifts on birthdays and Christmas, and really enjoy looking for just the right present, that is just right for that person (and that will fit in in their budget). Because remember, it isn't just kids getting gifts, it is for them to learn to GIVE gifts.
So I pinned the ex-bf down on when was the last time he GAVE a gift to a family member........and I don't mean something expensive, he is a teen after all. He may have given his Mom something once a long time ago, didn't think he had ever given anything to his Dad, and knew for a fact that he had NEVER given anything to his brother. So much for giving gifts throughout the year. It is pure BS. This JW boy loved getting things himself, but really didn't have any joy in giving and really didn't know how.
